AMPLIAQUA

The Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) Presential Course is set to take place from October 1 to 4, 2024, in Nazaré, Portugal. This hands-on course, organized by Morefish, Food4Sustainability CoLab and BGI - Building Global Innovators, will provide professionals in the aquaculture industry with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and expertise in the innovative use of RAS technology.

Designed for professionals working in aquaculture, biology, environmental sciences, marine sciences, and related fields, the RAS course offers a combination of theoretical learning and practical exercises. The goal is to optimize aquaculture production while promoting sustainability, efficiency, and resource management. Participants will explore key topics such as water quality management, system dimensioning, fish welfare, and environmental sustainability. The course will run for 3.5 days and include a comprehensive agenda of lectures, discussions, and hands-on training.

One of the course highlights is a site visit to the AmpliAqua RAS facility in Nazaré. Participants will see firsthand how advanced RAS technology is implemented on a large scale, integrating fish, vegetables, and microalgae production into a circular system. This visit offers a practical perspective, allowing attendees to observe real-world applications of the concepts studied during the course.

The RAS Presential Course is a critical opportunity for industry professionals to develop their understanding of sustainable aquaculture practices. Participants will receive expert instruction from seasoned professionals with extensive experience in RAS. In addition to theoretical knowledge, attendees will gain access to specialized tools for dimensioning RAS facilities and developing production plans, which they will practice using during the course. This course aligns with an important event taking place on October 25th, 2024, when the official delegation of EEA Grants will visit the AmpliAqua facilities. This visit will showcase the innovative technologies and methodologies AmpliAqua has successfully implemented, including advanced waste management systems, RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems), and innovations in fish quality control. As a result, the delegation will observe firsthand the project’s significant contributions to sustainability and local economic growth. The event will also highlight the completion of AmpliAqua's first phase, which has already made an impactful difference in Nazaré and beyond.

The RAS Presential Course and the October 25th visit underscore the importance of advancing sustainable aquaculture practices to address global food demands and environmental challenges.

AmpliAqua is a fully operational unit of an innovative aquaponic system that demonstrates how land-based fish farming can adopt a sustainable and viable aquaponic system, by integrating new solutions to ensure adequate and sound waste management. ​

 

Aquaculture and hydroponics, when used in combination and in micronutrient balance (aquaponic), represent a technology with the potential to play a key role in creating a more sustainable and resilient agri-food system through the development of a symbiotic ecosystem that requires less land and water and contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions. ​  

 

AmpliAqua introduces important innovations to aquaponic systems that increase productivity and sustainability when it comes to the production of fish (aquaculture), vegetables (hydroponics) and microalgae. This multitrophic system contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions, as a result of the capture of algae and plants, and the treatment of solid waste in a bio-digester that minimizes greenhouse gas emissions. AmpliAqua is modular and reproducible and can be implemented globally, even in areas with limited resources. ​
